Animals

When I was a kid I could talk to anyone, even people who were dead.
What do you care if I'm falling for animals? It's not like we were making love.
Like a kid I'm blushing bright as an apple as I follow traces in the snow.
There are others sharing my body, trembling like the water in the wind.
My dad was a kid when his mother died, then he was a little man.
My friends want to learn to fall on their knees again.

There's a moment or two after the cannonball.
In the generous pool the question confronts you:
Will you sink like a bag of sand in the easy muffle of big blue?
Unequivocal now, say it right out loud.
If you see something wrong with this, spit it out.
Will you still place the word in trembling counterpoint to the breath you drew?
Share a chorus or two over the neighborhood.
Nothing better to do after we've said it all.
Will you sink like a bag of sand in the easy muffle of big blue?

Mother's Day

I took a walk down to Hana's flat
to talk about my latest panic attack.
They had made a tent where I could hide
but I broke down the moment I got inside.
Can't stay home trying to relax,
let's take the dog to the railroad tracks.
Let's hit the road, I've been missing that.
Teenage dream, living where it's at.
Walking home I thought I saw her face.
Just a stranger, I look the other way.
Yeah, you know, I still miss Christine.
I let it go, no one's what they seem.
Nica's talking about a book she read.
Jesse gives me a piece of homemade bread
even though I missed rent again.
It's not a family, but I think we're friends.
They went out, I stayed in to pray
and drink a bit, cause it was Mother's Day.

Wild Fire

We were out walking through corn and the forest, wrapped in many layers to keep our bodies warm. The dog, she was running through the field and the bushes, and all that we encountered we had never seen before.
My heart's in California in some spiders floating orb, by the river with no water where the wild fires roam. My home's called Hudson Valley, where the water overflows and the deer run through the city heeding neither friend nor foe.

Ghosts

Black ink, white teeth breaking like a cloud.
I saw you singing right out loud.
Her room, her mouth, only yours for now.
You know we're out here counting down.
Soft wings, sharp sounds, flocking all around:
I've known you once or twice by now.
Black ink, dark shroud, caught me in the crib.
One day you'll show me what I did.

For Morgan

What to think and what to say?
It was only a flash in the pan.
Drunk night driving past the fire,
don't speak of it again.
I'm sorry I was late to your birthday,
you know I was caught in myself.
If I was fucked up when you visited
I'm sorry, I'll straighten it out.
Well my wise and prudent brother,
soft and distant friend,
are you lonely, and you tired,
are you caving in?
I'm sorry I was late in responding
to the letter you thoughtfully wrote.
I'm glad that you made it to LA,
I know that you'll figure it out.
One to cover, one to keep,
and one to throw away.
In the garden, in your sleep,
and through the mouth of the grave.
I saw you contend with the pattern,
you don't have to say it out loud.
Your mother is lucky to have you,
your father will figure it out.

Mother Bird
03:37
|
|||
Baby flew against the grain,
crashed into the open sky.
So you smash the window pane,
mother bird don't die.
You'd take an open flame,
hold it to your open eye.
We only share a name,
you are not like me.
I know you're only sleeping...
I saw the opening
through a hail of broken teeth.
I heard the chorus sing,
flocking to the breach,
Who turns the engine shaft?
Whose eyes are growing weak?
Who drops the rigid jaw
forcing you to speak?
I know you're only sleeping...
Biting through the novocaine,
drop of blood upon my arm,
lift it on my nail and then
walk out of the yard.
East to see the city sing,
North to hold the past on high,
South to catch my breath again,
West until I die.
I know I'm only sleeping...

Chalk

Forgot what I wanted to say, I just wanted to talk. That's enough, if I had more courage I'd stop. If I had more courage I'd already be long gone. Leave myself empty and dumb as a cloud of chalk.
Abraham, would you have gone though with it even if Isaac ran? Unflinching murder in faith to a stranger's plan. How could you know you'd stay clean in the eyes of Man?
I don't know how to be my best, or be honest at all. I understand a song is a sandcastle covered in flowers, and I hold the kingdom of heaven within me, but eyes of the ones that I love crowd around me.
